Risk factors for the development of postoperative delirium in pediatric intensive care patients

Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Oct 08, 2018

Meyburg J, et al. - Researchers performed a single-center prospective cohort study to characterize risk factors for postoperative pediatric delirium. They analyzed all children admitted following major elective surgery (n = 93; 0-17 years) at a 22 bed PICU in a tertiary care academic medical center in Germany. Findings revealed that delirium was highly prevalent in the PICU and was more frequent and more pronounced among younger children. Compared to inhalational anesthesia, total IV anesthesia had a lower risk. While all groups showed similar duration of anesthesia, they displayed significant differences in cumulative doses of various medications (eg, sedatives, analgesics, and anticholinergics); these differences were independent of severity of disease. Increased risk of delirium was seen in correlation with invasive catheters, respiratory devices, and infections.
