Risk factors for the development of invasive aspergillosis after kidney transplantation: Systematic review and meta‐analysis
American Journal of Transplantation Aug 16, 2020
Pérez‐Jacoiste Asín MA, López‐Medrano F, Fernández‐Ruiz M, et al. - Researchers determined risk factors for invasive aspergillosis (IA) following kidney transplantation (KT), by performing a systematic review and meta‐analysis. PubMed and EMBASE were explored to select studies published until June 2020. They found 11 case‐control studies, with 319 IA cases and 835 controls. In recipients with underlying chronic lung diseases and in those experiencing diabetic nephropathy, a raised risk of IA was found. An increased risk was reported in relation to needing post‐transplant hemodialysis or surgical reintervention. Data showed a positive association between IA and post‐transplant bacterial infection, respiratory‐tract viral infection, CMV infection or disease and acute graft rejection. An attenuated risk was observed in relation to receiving a kidney from a living donor. Experts suggested close monitoring in KT recipients that accumulate various of these conditions, and a low threshold of suspicion for IA should be maintained.
