Risk factors for subsequent recurrence after surgical treatment of recurrent pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland
Head & Neck Dec 10, 2020
Rooker SA, Van Abel KM, Yin LX, et al. - Given that recurrent pleomorphic adenoma (PA) can be a lifelong disease, and rates of subsequent recurrence are high, researchers conducted this investigation to analyze risk factors for subsequent recurrence after surgical treatment of recurrent PA of the parotid gland. Between 2000 and 2015, patients were identified. A higher number of previous recurrences, worse preoperative facial nerve function, and deep parotid lesion(s) were risk factors for subsequent recurrence. Subsequent recurrence rates are low for patients with a > 10-year interval since their last surgery, which may allow for surveillance recommendations if needed. Closer monitoring is needed for patients presenting with recurrent PA and ≤ 10 years after their last surgery.
