Risk factors for shivering during cesarean section under spinal anesthesia. A prospective observational study
Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Aug 29, 2019
Wódarski B, Chutkowski R, Banasiewicz J, et al. - Via a prospective, observational study of 155 parturients, researchers investigated the potential risk factors for intraoperative shivering, including anxiety levels. Shivering incidence was 21.9% (34 parturients). The statistical model prognosticated 8.5% of a shivering incidence variability. Only the number of former deliveries and STAI-X1 out of all measured variables were important. In our model, the risk of shivering reduced by 44% with every prior delivery and rose by 5.2% with each 1-point rise in STAI-X1. Thus, a strong relationship between the measured variables and shivering could not be proved. The conclusions, nevertheless, support the hypothesis, that to a limited extent, anxiety promotes shivering during the cesarean section.
