Wódarski B, Chutkowski R, Banasiewicz J, et al. - Including patients undergoing elective caesarean section (CS) under spinal anaesthesia, researchers performed this prospective, observational study to determine the potential risk factors for intraoperative shivering, including anxiety levels. They analyzed data from 155 parturients. Using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) questionnaire, parturient anxiety levels were assessed. Shivering incidence was estimated to be 21.9% (34 parturients). They found that 8.5% of a shivering incidence variability was predicted by the statistical model. The significance of only the number of prior deliveries and STAI-X1, among all measured variables, was revealed. In this study, a strong correlation between the measured variables and shivering was not confirmed. However, the hypothesis, that to a limited extent, anxiety promotes shivering during CS, was supported.
