Risk factors for severe liver disease in patients with type 2 diabetes
Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology Jun 18, 2019
Björkström K, et al. - Via performing Cox regression, researchers estimated the risk of severe liver disease and analyzed risk factors in persons with type 2 diabetes. For this investigation, 406,770 persons with type 2 diabetes and 2,033,850 controls were involved and followed for 21,596,934 person-years. In patients with type 2 diabetes, the risk for severe liver disease was increased vs controls. Higher age, male sex, hypertension, higher body mass index, lower glomerular filtration rate, microalbuminuria, and smoking were risk factors associated with severe liver disease in persons with type 2 diabetes. Findings suggested an association of statins with a decreased risk of severe liver disease. The authors concluded that there is an enhanced risk of severe liver disease for people with type 2 diabetes. Risk factor knowledge can be useful in identifying people with type 2 diabetes who are at high risk for severe liver disease.
