Risk factors for severe COVID-19 in children
The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal Mar 19, 2021
Graff K, Smith C, Silveira L, et al. - Researchers conducted a retrospective cohort study among children with positive SARS-CoV-2 PCR at Children’s Hospital Colorado in order to report on the epidemiology as well as risk factors for severe COVID-19 disease in children. They assessed a total of 454 patients with SARS-CoV-2 (median age 11 years). Outcomes revealed that for severe disease in children, predictors were extremes of age, comorbid conditions [including immunocompromise, gastrointestinal condition, diabetes, asthma], and elevated C-reactive protein. In light of these findings, pediatric providers and public health officials can tailor clinical management, pandemic planning, and resource allocation.
