Ahiawodzi PD, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the risk factors for sepsis morbidity in a rural hospital population. In a rural hospital, sepsis risk was observed to be associated with indwelling medical device use. Risk factors for sepsis morbidity also included coronary heart disease. Government-issued health insurance shown to have a borderline significance with sepsis risk. Most frequently, sepsis was secondary to urinary tract infections and pneumonia. Findings highlighted the necessity for implementation and maintenance of infection control measures during management of patients with indwelling medical devices at a rural hospital.
