Risk factors for scabies treatment resistance: A retrospective cohort study
Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology Oct 06, 2021
Lee SK, Kim JH, Kim MS, et al. - According to this retrospective cohort study, patients with scabies who have limited mobility and have used topical steroids before to diagnosis are at significant risk of developing treatment resistance. Dermatologists should consider these data while treating individuals with scabies infestations.
Scabies infestations were confirmed by potassium hydroxide (KOH) tests on patients.
This study comprised 138 patients with scabies infestations who were treated between January 2017 and December 2020.
One hundred (72.5%) of these patients were successfully treated, while 38 (27.5%) exhibited treatment resistance.
Impaired cognitive function, limited mobility, inpatient status, topical steroid usage before diagnosis, systemic steroid use before diagnosis, and a positive KOH exam after the first treatment were all risk variables for treatment resistance scabies in the univariable analysis.
In the multivariable analysis, reduced mobility and prior topical steroid usage were significant predictors of treatment resistance scabies.
