Risk factors for recurrence of ameloblastoma: A long-term follow-up retrospective study
International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery May 17, 2019
Au SW, et al. - In this retrospective study, researchers reviewed cases of a total of 128 patients (65 were male and 63 were female) to study the long-term treatment outcomes of ameloblastoma. In addition, they appraised the risk factors for recurrence. They conducted this study in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Faculty of Dentistry, the University of Hong Kong. The 5-year recurrence rate was 9.3%, the 10-year recurrence rate was 17.6%, and the 15-year recurrence rate was 24.4%. In Kaplan–Meier and Cox regression tests, radiographic pattern, tumor size, and treatment modality were noted to be significantly associated with recurrence. Performing multiple regression analysis for these three variables, they identified an independent prognostic value of only treatment modality for recurrence. The only significant factor for a low recurrence rate of ameloblastoma was radical resection. Long-term follow-up for late-onset recurrence is recommended for these patients.
