Risk factors for rate of relapse and effects of steroid maintenance therapy in patients with autoimmune pancreatitis: Systematic review and meta-analysis
Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology Apr 25, 2019
Tacelli M, et al. - Researchers estimated the relapse rate of autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) after initial remission after steroid treatment and identified factors correlated with relapse through a systematic review and meta-analysis. Thirty-six studies fulfilled the meta-analysis inclusion criteria. Investigators found that a large proportion of patients with AIP treated successfully with steroid induction therapy had a relapse (33%)-especially patients with type 1 AIP (37%) in a systematic review and meta-analysis. Maintenance steroid therapy that lasts longer than 1 year may reduce the risk of recurrence. The data characterizing relapse rates, however, are of limited quality, indicating the need for controlled randomized trials and new immunosuppressive drugs.
