Risk factors for progression toward brain death after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest
Annals of Intensive Care Apr 12, 2019
Cour M, et al. - In this study that included 214 adult patients admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) who survived at least 24 hours following an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA), researchers investigated risk factors for evolution toward brain death (BD) post-OHCA via multivariate logistic regression. They defined BD in accordance with international guidelines. A total of 19.6% of participants developed BD. The investigators identified five simple risk factors that were independently related to progression toward BD: age, female sex, neurological cause of OHCA, duration of the low-flow period > 16 minutes, and need of vasoactive drugs at 24 hours.
