Risk factors for permanent childhood hearing impairment
Archives of Diseases in Childhood Jan 28, 2020
Butcher E, et al. - In this investigation involving 19,504 candidates from the UK Millennium Cohort Study (born 2000–2002, prior to newborn screening), researchers intended to determine if there is a connections between parent-reported permanent childhood hearing impairment (PCHI) by age 11 years and gestational length, plus other prespecified factors using multivariable discrete-time survival analysis. Data reported that PCHI affected 2.1 per 1,000 children by age 11. Findings revealed that neonatal illness predicts risk for PCHI, rather than gestational length. In those with neonatal illness, with or without admission to neonatal care, of Bangladeshi or Pakistani ethnicity or born to younger mothers, the risk was increased.
