Risk factors for perioperative mortality after revascularization for acute aortic occlusion
Journal of Vascular Surgery Jun 28, 2018
Mohapatra A, et al. - The perioperative morbidity and mortality associated with revascularization for acute aortic occlusion (AAO) were described. Researchers also identified the patients at highest risk. Performing a retrospective chart review of patients who presented to their institution from 2006 to 2017 with acute distal aortic occlusion, they identified a high risk of mortality and numerous life-threatening complications in association with AAO. Even with prompt revascularization and despite the chosen treatment modality, the risk remained. The highest risk of perioperative mortality was observed for older patients presenting with elevated lactate levels, motor deficit, and bilateral internal iliac artery occlusions. In this critically ill population, these factors may help in risk stratification and managing expectations.
