Risk factors for non-HPV16/18 cervical infections and associated lesions among HPV-DNA-negative women vaccinated against HPV16/18 in the Costa Rica Vaccine Trial (CVT)
The Journal of Infectious Diseases Dec 23, 2020
Sierra MS, Tsang SH, Shangying Hu, et al. - In view of the lacunae concerning the factors that lead human papillomavirus (HPV) infections to persist and progress to cancer, especially among vaccinated women, researchers here investigated a cohort of HPV-vaccinated women for co-factors for acquisition, persistence and progression of non-HPV16/18 infections. A total of 2,153 18-25-year-old women randomized to the HPV-vaccine arm of CVT were analyzed. Among these women, detection of 1,777 incident oncogenic non-HPV16/18 infections was made in 12,292 visits (average 0.14 infections per visit). Findings revealed correlation of age and sexual behavior variables with acquisition of oncogenic non-HPV16/18 infections. No notable factors are identified to be linked with persistence of acquired oncogenic non-HPV16/18 infections, and there is correlation of age, parity and hormonally-related exposures with progression to CIN2+.
