Risk factors for new-onset diabetes mellitus after heart transplantation in Chinese patients: A single center experience

Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism May 05, 2019

Zhang M, et al. - Among 154 adult Chinese heart transplant recipients, researchers determined the incidence of, and contributors to, new-onset diabetes after transplantation (NODAT). Following a median follow-up duration of 611 days, a diagnosis of NODAT was received by 32.5% of recipients. At 3, 6, and 12 months, the cumulative incidence of NODAT was 27.3%, 29.9%, and 30.5%, respectively. Age ≥ 45 years, hypertension, and transient hyperglycemia were identified as independent risk factors for NODAT. Moreover, a significantly higher prevalence of NODAT was observed in recipients treated with both acarbose and insulin for transient hyperglycemia vs those without any anti-diabetic agents.
