Risk factors for new-onset atrial fibrillation in patients with sepsis: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Critical Care Medicine Jan 24, 2019
Bosch NA, et al. - By searching Medline, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane CENTRAL, researchers identified studies that assessed the risk factors for new-onset atrial fibrillation during sepsis. Forty-four factors, 18 of which were included in meta-analyses, were examined as possible risk factors for new-onset atrial fibrillation in sepsis. Demographic factors, comorbid conditions, and most strongly, sepsis-related factors were included risk factors for new-onset atrial fibrillation. Corticosteroid use, right heart catheterization, fungal infection, vasopressor use, and a mean arterial pressure target of 80–85 mm Hg were included sepsis-related factors with a greater than 50% change in odds of new-onset atrial fibrillation. Several cardiovascular conditions known to be risk factors for community-related atrial fibrillation have not been identified as risk factors for new-onset atrial fibrillation in sepsis. Overall, they suggested that risk factors for new-onset atrial fibrillation during sepsis were mainly acute sepsis-related factors and were not synonymous with risk factors for community-related atrial fibrillation.
