Risk factors for nephrolithiasis in adults with short bowel syndrome
Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism Aug 28, 2019
Yang J, Sun H, Wan S, et al. - Among adults with short bowel syndrome (SBS) retrospectively identified from a prospectively maintained database, researchers investigated risk factors for nephrolithiasis. This study included overall 231 adults with SBS, with mean age 46.4 ± 17.8 years and mean body mass index 18.2 ± 3.8 kg/m2. Among those, the development of nephrolithiasis was documented in 42 (18.2%). In multivariate binary logistic regression analysis, jejuno-ileal anastomosis and colon-in-continuity, prolonged duration of SBS, and increased serum creatinine level were identified as independent risk factors for nephrolithiasis among the participants. Overall, a common prevalence of nephrolithiasis was reported in this patient population. Close monitoring of patients with SBS and taking prophylactic interventions into account were recommended because of the possible adverse clinical results of nephrolithiasis.
