Risk factors for nephrolithiasis in adults with short bowel syndrome
Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism Sep 21, 2019
Yang J, Sun H, Wan S, et al. - Using a prospectively maintained database, researchers examined 231 adults with short bowel syndrome (SBS) who were retrospectively identified, to determine the factors that confer risk for nephrolithiasis in these patients. For this purpose, they used univariate and multivariate analyses and analyzed demographic and clinical features of the patients. Nephrolithiasis development was documented in 42 (18.2%) patients. This shows a common prevalence of nephrolithiasis in adults with SBS. In multivariate binary logistic regression analysis, jejuno-ileal anastomosis and colon-in-continuity, prolonged duration of SBS, and raised serum creatinine levels were all identified as the independent risk factors for nephrolithiasis. Close monitoring, as well as prophylactic interventions for patients with SBS, was recommended because nephrolithiasis can have adverse clinical outcomes.
