Risk factors for multiple hemorrhages following tonsil surgery in children
The Laryngoscope Dec 13, 2018
McKeon M, et al. - Experts sought to identify the risk factors that may contribute to multiple hemorrhages following tonsil surgery in children. They conducted a retrospective review of pediatric patients who experienced one or more hemorrhages after tonsillectomy/tonsillotomy, with or without adenoidectomy, between 2010 and 2016 at a single, tertiary-care hospital. After tonsillectomy/tonsillotomy, multiple hemorrhages were commonly observed. They noted 7.1% to be the risk of a second PTH after an initial episode, almost double the risk of a bleed after the initial tonsil surgery. Findings suggested a probable association of the age > 12 years and high BMI for age with increased risk of rebleeding.
