Risk factors for mortality and neurodevelopmental impairment among neonates born at 22–23 weeks’ gestation

Neonatology Mar 29, 2021

Kurimoto T, Ibara S, Kamitomo M, et al. - Researchers conducted this retrospective case-control study to assess the risk factors for mortality and neurodevelopmental impairment (NDI) among infants aged 22–23 weeks of gestation. The sample consisted of 104 infants delivered at 22–23 weeks’ gestation at Kagoshima City Hospital from 2006 to 2015. Data reported that the survival rate was 75.0% and 62.0% among infants born at 22 and 23 weeks of gestation, respectively. Infants who died weighed less and had a higher intrauterine growth retardation rate. Intrauterine growth retardation, bradycardia, periventricular hemorrhagic infarction (PVHI), necrotizing enterocolitis, and tension pneumothorax were linked to neonatal mortality among infants born at 22–23 weeks of gestation. NDI at 36–42 months’ chronological age was related to PVHI.
