Risk factors for moderate to severe pain during the first 24 hours after laparoscopic bariatric surgery while receiving intravenous patient-controlled analgesia
Anesthesiology Research and Practice Oct 08, 2019
Iamaroon A, Tangwiwat S, Nivatpumin P, et al. - In this retrospective study, researchers determined the incidence of and risk factors for moderate to severe pain during the first 24 hours following laparoscopic bariatric surgery. They analyzed 97 morbidly obese patients, with a mean age of 38.60 ± 12.27 years and mean BMI of 45.04 ± 8.42 kg/m2 (69% were female) who had undergone laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass at a single institution between June 2016 and July 2018. Among patients undergoing laparoscopic bariatric surgery and receiving intravenous patient-controlled analgesia after postanesthesia care unit (PACU) discharge, 75% suffered moderate to severe pain. Only inadequate pain control at PACU discharge independently conferred risk for moderate to severe pain during the first 24 hours after the surgery.
