Risk factors for late-onset lower limb lymphedema after gynecological cancer treatment: A multi-institutional retrospective study
European Journal of Surgical Oncology Mar 12, 2020
Yoshihara M, Shimono R, Tsuru S, et al. - In view of challenges encountered in managing late-onset lower limb lymphedema (LLL) by physicians who deal with patients that undergo treatment involving the pelvic cavity, researchers here sought to determine the prevalence of and risk factors for late-onset LLL after treatment for gynecological cancer. In this multicenter retrospective study, they used records of 711 cases (mean age: 50.2 years) in which LLL was diagnosed by physical findings and measurement of limb girths. The Median follow-up period was 5.05 years. LLL was diagnosed ≥ 5 years after undergoing treatment for gynecological cancer in more than half of the cases (50.5%). LLL developed in a substantial number of patients (29.4%) ≥ 10 years after undergoing treatment for gynecological cancer. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, significant risk factors for late-onset LLL were being aged < 50 years, cervical cancer, and radiotherapy.
