Risk factors for late-onset lower limb lymphedema after gynecological cancer treatment: A multi-institutional retrospective study
European Journal of Surgical Oncology Feb 07, 2020
Yoshihara M, Shimono R, Tsuru S, et al. - Researchers investigated the prevalence of and risk factors for late-onset lower limb lymphedema (LLL) following treatment for gynecological cancer via performing a multicenter retrospective study utilizing records of cases in which LLL was diagnosed by physical findings and measurement of limbs girths. The required criteria were fulfilled by 711 patients (mean age: 50.2 years; median follow-up period: 5.05 years). LLL developed in more than half of the patients (50.5%) within the period of ≥ 5 years after undergoing treatment for gynecological cancer. Development of LLL was reported in a substantial number of patients (29.4%) ≥ 10 years after undergoing treatment for gynecological cancer. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed the following as significant risk factors for late-onset LLL: being aged < 50 years, cervical cancer, and radiotherapy.
