Risk factors for herpes zoster infection among Filipinos with systemic lupus erythematosus
International Journal of Rheumatic Diseases Nov 15, 2019
Zamora LD, et al. - A case-control study of herpes zoster (HZ) infection was conducted in SLE people observed at the University of Santo Tomas Lupus Clinics from 2009-2014 in order to ascertain clinical risk factors related to HZ infections in SLE. Sixty-five SLE persons who developed HZ were matched with 130 SLE people without HZ. It was discovered that risk factors related to the development of HZ in SLE were immunosuppressives and corticosteroid use. Among people given intravenous cyclophosphamide and mycophenolate mofetil for lupus nephritis, a rise in the risk for HZ was noted. Moreover, SLE disease activity did not exhibit a direct relationship with HZ occurrence. Also, hydroxychloroquine use seemed to have a shielding role against HZ infection.
