Risk factors for heart failure in the community: Differences by age and ejection fraction
American Journal of Medicine Nov 23, 2019
Chamberlain AM, Boyd CM, Manemann SM, et al. - In 2,643 incident heart failure persons, the prevalence of 17 chronic conditions were collected from 2000-2013 and controls matched 1:1 on gender and age from Olmsted County, MN in order to document the disparities in comorbid conditions in heart failure people in comparison with population controls, and to ascertain whether disparities existed by type of heart failure or age. It was noted that compared with controls, heart failure individuals have a greater prevalence of many chronic conditions. In individuals with decreased and preserved ejection fraction, comparable relationships were noted, with the exception of hypertension which was more robustly related to heart failure with preserved ejection fraction. In conclusion, in younger persons, some cardiometabolic risk factors were more firmly correlated with heart failure, reflecting the significance of optimizing prevention and treatment of risk factors, and especially cardiometabolic risk factors.
