Risk factors for febrile genito-urinary infection in the catheterized patients by with spinal cord injury-associated chronic neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction evaluated by urodynamic study and cystography: A retrospective study

Shigemura K, et al. - In patients with spinal cord injury-associated neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD) who conduct routine clean intermittent catheterization (CIC), researchers evaluated risk factors predictive of febrile genito-urinary tract infection (GUTI) assessed by urodynamic study and cystography. In 41 patients with febrile GUTI, they noted Escherichia coli (14 cases) Pseudomonas aeruginosa (n = 5), Klebsiella pneumoniae (n = 4), and Klebsiella oxytoca (n = 4) were the causative bacteria. They observed antibiotic-resistant E. coli, with 36.4% cases of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase production in whole of E. coli. They reported a significant association of male gender, ASIA Impairment Scale (AIS) C or more severe, the number of CIC, use of quinolones, and severe bladder deformity with febrile GUTI occurrence in these patients.
