Risk factors for early mortality with inferior vena cava filters

Journal of Vascular Surgery Feb 26, 2021

Brahmandam A, Kostiuk V, Grubman S, et al. - As a significant number of patients undergoing inferior vena cava filters (IVCF) placement expire within 30 days of insertion because of underlying disease, despite it being a low risk procedure, researchers sought to determine the incidence and risk factors for early mortality after IVCF placement in a tertiary care center. Among a total of 1,409 IVCF placed between 2007 and 2019, the 30-day mortality of 12% was observed and those 173 patients constituted the early mortality group. The early mortality group had a higher rate of iliac vein (17.9% vs 11.1%) and femoral vein deep vein thrombosis (49.1% vs 39.9%). Patients in the early mortality group were more frequently of older age as well as were significantly more likely to have cancer and failure of anticoagulation. Conversely, significantly less likelihood to have trauma or recent major surgery as risk factors was observed for patients in the early mortality group. These findings suggest that a high 30-day mortality after IVCF placement is encountered in certain groups of patients.
