Risk factors for complications in cochlear implant surgery
European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology Feb 16, 2018
Theunisse HJ, et al. - This trial aimed to achieve uniform reporting of complications and failures in cochlear implantation. In addition, authors analyzed the difficulties and failures, and determined the risk factors for complications in a series of over 1300 cochlear implantations. Uniform and objective registration of adverse events were enabled by the use of a strict definition of a medical complication and device failure along with the Clavien–Dindo classification system. It also prevented any tendency to downgrade complications. In this series, the complication and failure rates were noted to be comparable with those reported in the literature. Findings revealed the requirement for pneumococcal vaccination which could be helpful in preventing general wound infections. In patients with inner ear malformation, with an increased risk of (postoperative) meningitis, pneumococcal vaccination was particularly important.
