Risk factors for complications after cholecystectomy for common bile duct stones: An EAST multicenter study
Surgery May 29, 2020
Tracy BM, Paterson CW, Torres DM, et al. - Researchers aimed at determining risk factors for biliary complications and 30-day readmission after cholecystectomy for choledocholithiasis and gallstone pancreatitis across multiple US hospitals. In this prospective, observational study of 989 patients, they identified occurrence of postoperative biliary complications in 16 (1.6%) patients; the complications included intra-abdominal abscesses, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography-induced pancreatitis, and biliary leaks. Jaundice, worsening leukocytosis, and longer operations were noted to be linked with postoperative biliary complications among patients undergoing cholecystectomy for common bile duct stones. A prior biliary complication is further predictive of a 30-day readmission. They recommend identifying these factors and avoid prematurely discharging at-risk patients given their propensity to develop complications and require readmission.
