Risk factors for CIDP: Antecedent events, lifestyle and dietary habits. Data from the Italian CIDP database
European Journal of Neurology Jul 26, 2019
Doneddu PE, et al. - Researchers conducted this investigation to identify the part payed by lifestyle and dietary habits and previous events in chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP). In patients with CIDP included in an Italian CIDP database, information about modifiable environmental factors and previous infections and vaccinations were collected. They only included patients who reported that their diet or lifestyle habits had not altered after CIDP onset. Data on diet and lifestyle were accessible for 323 patients and 266 controls. In the analysis, a total of 195 cases and 195 sex-matched controls were used. A lower risk of acquiring CIDP was seen in patients who ate rice at least three times per week or fish at least once per week. Previous events within 1-42 days before CIDP onset were reported by 15.5% of patients, including infections in 12% and vaccinations in 1.5%. Cranial nerve involvement and acute onset of CIDP was more common in patients with CIDP and antecedent infections vs those without these antecedent events.
