Risk factors for choroidal detachment after Ahmed valve implantation in glaucoma patients

American Journal of Ophthalmology Nov 22, 2019

Shin DY, et al. - In this retrospective case-control study involving 188 glaucoma individuals (188 eyes), researchers evaluated the incidence and risk factors associated with choroidal detachment following glaucoma drainage device (Ahmed valve) implantation. The sample consisted of patients who had Ahmed valve implantation surgery. According to the presence or absence of choroidal detachment, participants were divided into two groups. According to wide field fundus photography, the incidence of choroidal detachment was 35.1% and according to 30-degree fundus photography was 16.9%. Age, CCT, axial length, glaucoma etiology, cataract or glaucoma history, hypertension, diabetes, and severity of the visual field were different between the choroidal detachment and nonchoroidal detachment groups. According to the introduction of wide fundus photography, the detection of choroidal detachment after Ahmed valve implantation could be increased. Findings suggested an association of the risk of choroidal detachment with the etiology of glaucoma, older age, pseudophakia (lens status), and hypertension. Chamber collapse risk was linked to only short axial length.
