Risk factors for breakthrough SARS-CoV-2 infection in vaccinated healthcare workers
PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases Oct 24, 2021
Alishaq M, Nafady-Hego H, Jeremijenko A, et al. - Researchers sought the risk factors for breakthrough SARS-CoV-2 infection after completion of a full course of vaccination among healthcare workers (HCWs) at Hamad Medical Corporation in Qatar.
A total of 22,247 fully vaccinated HCWs were identified; 164 of these HCWs had breakthrough infection.
Comparison of the HCWs with breakthrough infection was done with 164 matched controls to determine the risk factors for breakthrough infection.
Major risk factors for breakthrough SARS-CoV-2 infection after vaccination include presence of symptoms and contact with a confirmed case; prioritization of these groups for screening is recommended even after full vaccination.
