Risk factors for 1-year mortality and hospital utilization patterns in critical care survivors: A retrospective, observational, population-based data linkage study
Critical Care Medicine Dec 21, 2018
Szakmany T, et al. - In this population-based data linkage study, researchers used the Secure Anonymised Information Linkage databank to assess the care process and individual factors related to long-term mortality among 40,631 patients discharged alive from Welsh adult intensive care units (ICUs). They focused on 365-day survival, 30- and 90-day survival, and hospital utilization in the 365 days following ICU discharge. They used Cox proportional hazards regression models to determine risk factors of mortality. According to findings, 1 in 5 ICU survivors die within 1 year of discharge. Advanced age and comorbidity were identified as significant predictors of outcome, resulting in high resource use. In addition, they observed an increased risk in relation to care process factors, indicating high system stress. To optimize service delivery and improve long-term outcomes of the critically ill, further insight on the impact of potentially modifiable factors is needed.
