Risk factors associated with oral manifestations and oral health impact of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease: A multicentre, cross-sectional study in Pakistan
BMJ Open Apr 03, 2019
Warsi I, et al. - In this cross-sectional study, researchers identified oral changes in soft and hard tissue in gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), a relatively common disorder and manifests with extraoesophageal symptoms, like dental erosions (DE), cough, laryngitis, asthma, and oral soft- and hard-tissue pathologies, patients and assessed these oral changes as indices for GORD assessment and severity. This investigation was carried out at four major tertiary care government hospitals, in two metropolitan cities of Pakistan. In total, the study included 187 out of 700 patients with oesophago–gastro–duodenoscopy and GORD. Investigators found that GORD and DE patients had more severe oral manifestations (ie, xerostomia, aphthoid mucosal ulceration, gingivitis and angular cheilitis) than GORD and no DE patients. In addition, the likelihood of developing chronic GORD and DE increases with unhealthy dietary patterns and frequent nausea/vomiting. To assess the severity of both systemic and oral disease, timely dental check-ups were recommended.
