Risk factors associated with bacteremia correlated with mortality in patients with acute bacterial skin and skin structure infection

Internal and Emergency Medicine Oct 29, 2018

Chang CP, et al. - In patients with acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI), researchers examined factors associated with positive blood cultures and mortality. Between March 2015 and December 2016, they investigated hospitalized adult patients with ABSSSI in a tertiary hospital in Taiwan. Study participants included 1,322 hospitalized patients with ABSSSI. Findings revealed that the overall mortality rate was 2.1%, and 122 patients had positive blood culture results. For patients with ABSSSI and diabetes mellitus or chronic kidney disease or those exhibiting abnormal C-reactive protein, glucose, or albumin levels due to the positive relationship between bacteremia and mortality, the authors suggested that blood culture should be considered.
