Risk factors associated with attempted suicide among US army soldiers without a history of mental health diagnosis
JAMA Oct 10, 2018
Ursano RJ, et al. - Using administrative data from the Army Study to Assess Risk and Resilience in Servicemembers (Army STARRS), researchers conducted a retrospective longitudinal cohort study to investigate risk factors for suicide attempt among soldiers without a previous mental health diagnosis (MH-Dx). Irrespective of previous diagnosis, risk factors for attempt (sociodemographic, service related, physical health care, injury, subjection to crime, crime perpetration, and family violence) were similar, although the strength of associations varied. The study findings suggested that suicide attempt risk among soldiers with unrecognized mental health problems is a significant and important challenge. Analysis of personnel, medical, legal, and family services records may help to identify suicide attempt risk among soldiers with unrecognized mental health problems.
