Risk factors associated with 30-day all-cause unplanned hospital readmissions at a tertiary children's hospital in Western Australia
Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health May 22, 2019
Zhou H, et al. - Via retrospectively analyzing an administrative paediatric inpatient dataset, researchers identified risk factors correlated with 30-day all-cause unplanned hospital readmission at a tertiary children's hospital in Western Australia. For this investigation, they involved patients of all ages discharged between January 1, 2010, and December 31, 2014. Using multivariate logistic regression analysis, demographic and clinical information at the index admission was examined. At least one unplanned readmission after discharge was experienced by a total of 3330 patients (4.55%). Investigators found that patients who were admitted on Friday or discharged on Friday, Saturday or Sunday or had a longer hospital stay are at higher risk of re-admission. According to findings, a moderate discriminative ability predictive model for 30-day all-cause same hospital readmission has been developed. In order to ensure continuity of care for patients identified as at higher risk of readmission, a structured discharge plan is suggested to begin from admission. It is recommended that a designated member of staff be assigned to coordinate the plan, including assessing the readiness for the discharge of patients and primary caregivers.
