Risk factors and mortality of adults with lung cancer admitted to the intensive care unit
Journal of Thoracic Disease Aug 03, 2018
Lai CC, et al. - Researchers determined risk factors for intensive care unit (ICU) admission, infectious complications and organ dysfunction in the ICU among lung cancer patients, as well as prognosis after ICU admission. They analyzed the records of index-date-, age-, and sex-matched ICU-admitted lung cancer patients (n=17,687) and ICU-non-admitted lung cancer patients (n=35,374), focusing on 1-year mortality. They found that ICU admission for lung cancer patients was related to higher mortality. The identified independent mortality risk factors included age (≥ 75 years), male sex, recent radiotherapy, infectious complications, organ dysfunction, and hospital level.
