Risk Factors and Biomarkers for the Occurrence of Uveitis in Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis

Arthritis & Rheumatology Oct 04, 2018

Tappeiner c, et al. - In patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), researchers evaluated the prognostic value of demographic, clinical, and therapeutic aspects and laboratory biomarkers for predicting uveitis occurrence. They recruited patients with JIA within the first year following JIA diagnosis. JIA disease activity scores and laboratory biomarkers, apart from demographic risk factors and treatment modalities, could be used to better define the group of JIA patients at high risk of uveitis onset. They noted a significant association of S100A12 levels ≥250 ng/ml at baseline with the uveitis risk. A significant correlation of young age at JIA onset and ANA positivity with the onset of uveitis was noted. The risk of uveitis onset and the occurrence of uveitis-related complications was reduced with the treatment of arthritis with methotrexate alone or combined with etanercept.
