Risk factors affecting length of stay in patients with deep neck space infection
The Laryngoscope Aug 19, 2020
O'Brien KJ, Snapp KR, Dugan AJ, et al. - Researchers conducted this retrospective chart review to analyze risk factors affecting the length of stay (LOS) for patients presenting with deep neck space infections including care by medical vs surgical team. Factors related to deep neck space abscesses were analyzed from January 2005 through May 2018 at the University of Kentucky. The sample consisted of adults (n = 163) > 18 years old admitted for deep neck space infections undergoing surgical intervention. Patients receiving medical services had a higher diabetes incidence, a higher Charlson comorbidity score, and a higher incidence of repeat interventions. After adjusting for Charlson comorbidity scores, postoperative LOS remained lower for patients on a surgical service. LOS did not affect the use of a drain or the incidence of tobacco use.
