Risk factors affecting length of stay in patients with deep neck space infection
The Laryngoscope Dec 08, 2019
O'Brien KJ, et al. - This retrospective chart review was undertaken to determine if treatment service type influenced the length of stay (LOS) in patients needing surgical treatment for deep neck space infections, occurring in the potential cervical fascial planes of the head and neck, when accounting for confounding factors involving overall health status. This investigation was conducted at the University of Kentucky from January 2005 through May 2018. The sample consisted of 163 adults > 18 years old admitted for deep neck space infections undergoing surgical intervention. Findings suggested an association of increased postoperative LOS with age, diabetes, American Society of Anesthesiology class, Charlson comorbidity index, and repeat procedures. There were longer LOS and higher comorbidity indices for patients on a medicine service. After adjusting for comorbidity indices, patients had shorter hospital stays on surgical services. LOS was not affected by the use of a drain or tobacco use presence.
