Stroke Nov 10, 2021
Sluis WM, Linschoten M, Buijs JE, et al. - The frequency, risk factors, and outcomes of acute ischemic stroke in hospitalized patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are described.
Among a total of 2,147 patients with COVID-19, 586 (27.3%) required treatment at an intensive care unit.
Ischemic stroke was reported in 38 patients (1.8%).
Patients with a stroke were older.
The risk appeared higher in patients treated at an intensive care unit (16/586; 2.7% vs nonintensive care unit, 22/1561; 1.4%).
More common occurrence of pulmonary embolism was observed in patients with (8/38; 21.1%) vs without stroke (160/2109; 7.6%; adjusted risk ratio, 2.08 [95% CI, 1.52–2.84]).
There appeared a higher risk of in-hospital mortality for patients with vs without stroke.
Overall stroke patients, in majority, experienced a poor outcome.
