Risk adjustment in the California joint replacement registry: Is patient complexity accurately assessed in academic versus nonacademic hospitals?
Journal of Arthroplasty Aug 02, 2020
Amanatullah DF, Lawson KA, Li Z, et al. - This study was sought to describe the variations in observed versus expected arthroplasty outcomes between academic and non-academic hospitals in a large joint registry. The California Joint Replacement Registry’s data and risk adjustment model were employed. Researchers utilized observed vs expected hip and knee arthroplasty complications to assess hospital and surgeon risk-adjusted complication rates (RACRs). The disparities were reported in RACRs between non-academic and academic institutions. In a large arthroplasty database, this may reflect the difficulty of fully adjusting for medical risk and surgical complexity.
