Right atrial function predicts clinical outcome in patients with precapillary pulmonary hypertension

Journal of The American Society of Echocardiography Aug 12, 2018

Mouratoglou SA, et al. - Researchers presented the right atrial (RA) function index (RAFi) and examined its prognostic ability in precapillary pulmonary hypertension (PH). They calculated RA emptying fraction as (RA end-systolic volume − RA end-diastolic volume) × 100/(RA end-systolic volume). RAFi was calculated as (RA emptying fraction × right ventricular outflow tract velocity-time integral)/(RA end-systolic volume index). They focused on death, hospitalization because of PH, or disease progression. In univariate Cox proportional-hazard analysis, it was recognized that RAFi could predict clinical failure. They concluded that RAFi (an easily assessed echocardiographic parameter) strongly predicted clinical outcomes in patients with precapillary PH.
