Rheumatoid arthritis patients have higher prevalence and burden of asymptomatic coronary artery disease assessed by coronary computed tomography: A systematic literature review and meta-analysis

Hansen PR, et al. - Given that rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is associated with increased risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) and coronary computed tomography studies in these patients have suggested increased rates of asymptomatic CAD as determined by the coronary calcium score (CCS). Using CCS with or without coronary computed tomographic angiography (CCTA), researchers compared the prevalence and burden of asymptomatic CAD in RA and controls.
With data on 788 patients with RA and 1641 controls, eight studies were included. According to results, RA patients had significantly increased CAD risk and increased mean weighted CCS differences compared to controls. The results obtained from the systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature indicate that asymptomatic CAD is more prevalent in patients with RA, with higher mean CCS, more multivessel disease, and more plaques of high risk compared to controls.
