Rheumatoid arthritis in pregnancy and school performance in offspring
Arthritis Care & Research May 02, 2020
Knudsen SS, Simard JF, Christensen J, et al. - In this investigation involving children (n = 738,862) born in Denmark 1995‐2008, and listed in the National School Test Register, researchers investigated the overall cognitive development of children exposed to maternal rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in utero by contrasting their school test scores, to those of their peers. Through linkage of national registers, children exposed to maternal RA were identified. Nine hundred thirty-four children exposed to maternal RA in utero were identified. No differences were found in reading test scores, between maternal RA exposed and unexposed children. No appreciable difference was noted between children by maternal RA serostatus. Children exposed to preclinical RA (n = 589) demonstrated the same performance trend as those exposed to RA. RA exposed children scored marginally lower in math exams, but performed in the reading tests as well as their unexposed peers. The findings do not indicate that RA in pregnancy has a major effect on offspring school performance.
