Revision total elbow arthroplasty: Is it safe to perform a single-stage revision for presumed aseptic loosening based on clinical assessment, normal inflammatory markers and a negative aspiration?
Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Jun 17, 2020
Eyre-Brook AI, Gandhi MJ, Gopinath P, et al. - This study was intended to determine from the the outcomes whether it is safe to conduct a single-stage revision for presumed aseptic loosening using these criteria. Researchers conducted a retrospective review of a consecutive series of revision total elbow arthroplasty in the unit over a 10-year period (2008-2018). For presumed aseptic loosening, single-stage revisions performed were distinguished. They examined case notes, radiographs, bloods, aspiration results and microbiology of tissue samples taken at revision. They conducted a sum of 123 revision elbow arthroplasty cases in the study period. Given the outcomes of this research they conclude that is safe to perform single-stage revision arthroplasty for implant loosening based on history, examination, normal inflammatory markers and negative aspiration outcomes without the requirement for open biopsy.
