Revision surgery rates in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps: Meta-analysis of risk factors
International Forum of Allergy & Rhinology Nov 29, 2019
Loftus CA, Soler ZM, Koochakzadeh S, et al. - Given wide variations in revision endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) rates for chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP), researchers sought to determine the expected revision rates and the factors that impact the need for revision. Searching PubMed, Scopus, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, they included 45 studies with 34,220 individuals in this meta-analysis. Outcomes suggest that polyps can recur after ESS, however, the reported long-term ESS revision rates are approximately 14% to 24%. Increased revision rates were observed in correlation to following factors: allergic fungal rhinosinusitis, aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease, asthma, prior polypectomy, and publication prior to 2008.
