Review on long-term non-renal complications of childhood nephrotic syndrome
Acta Pediatrica Oct 28, 2019
Lee JM, et al. - Since nephrotic syndrome (NS) is the most common glomerular childhood disease, researchers explored the long-term non-renal outcomes of childhood NS, highlighting more than 10-year follow-up studies. The data presented in this work showed a number of immunosuppressive agents prevented inflammation, stabilised the podocyte cytoskeleton and reduced proteinuria. Nonetheless, prolonged care of patients with a complicated course of the disease, described as frequent relapses or steroid dependence, has often been linked to a high risk of renal and non-renal complications. Impaired longitudinal growth and pubertal development, undesirable fertility outcomes, ocular complications, bone mineral diseases and potential malignancies may be included non-renal complications.
